Coaching Youth Football – QPR Presentation

Many thanks to Steve McCarthy from QPR for coming to the Bank Of England tonight to present to the Sheen Lions coaches and managers on all the latest ideas used at their football academy to develop the next generation of football players.

Steve started with a video showing how players even as young as four are encouraged to develop many different ball skill “tricks” and went on to explain the latest ideas for coaches working to encourage and engage with young players and manage the involvement of their parents.

Steve McCarthy QPR - Coaching Youth FootballSheen Lions players especially in the younger age groups can expect to see all the great ideas introduced to their training sessions and on match days.

No Training Or Home Games 18th – 19th January

Due to the ground conditions LBRUT have informed us that the Palewell pitches are closed this weekend. There can be NO TRAINING and NO MATCHES at Palewell on 18th – 19th January.

Please note that Managers now need to ask their opposition if they can host the game.  You must wait till you hear from your Manager before you know for sure that you are not playing.

No Training Or Home Games 4th – 5th January

Due to the waterlogged pitches and the lack of pitch markings there can be NO TRAINING and NO MATCHES at Palewell this weekend 4th – 5th January.

Please note that Managers now need to ask their opposition if they can host the game. This is not very likely but maybe one of two teams may still play. You must wait till you hear from your Manager before you know for sure that you are not playing.

Sheen Lions U08 Play With QPR

Sheen Lions U08 @QPR

Saturday 16 th November saw Sheen Lions take our U8 groups to play against QPR U8s in a series of matches. The facilities were excellent with the boys warming up and playing on a 4G rubber crumb playing surface which is the nearest thing to playing on a perfect grass surface.

After a quick warm up and instructions from Scott and Geoff both teams proceeded to play against their respective sides. After a quiet start, probably due to the nature of the occasion, the boys really opened up and started to play with a confidence and freedom which we have been accustomed to witnessing at training. There was a multitude of passing patterns, coupled with superb attacking intent and some excellent finishing from a number of different players. On the flip side there was some wonderful defending both individually and collectively which showed a willingness to fight for the Sheen Lions cause!!!

All in all it was an excellent day which the boys thoroughly enjoyed and one they will probably remember for the rest of the footballing careers. It has been such a pleasure to be at the start of their journey and hopefully there will be many more days like this enabling them to develop and have loads of fun at the same time.

See you all at training.

Mr Trevor Hodge

Many thanks to QPR for arranging and hosting the matches. A few weeks ago our boys provided a guard of honour at a QPR first team fixture and this week many of our coaches attended a partnership evening at QPR to see and hear about the QPR academy.

Thanks to all the parents that sent in photos, we are always pleased to get these for the website.

Sheen Lions Boys Are Guard Of Honour At QPR v Derby

Sheen Lions @ QPR v Derby Co

As part of our relationship with QPR a number of Sheen Lions players and parents attended the QPR Derby Championship game on Saturday 2nd November. Our boys formed a guard of honour when the teams came out and got a chance to feel the atmosphere on the pitch before the game.

Even better for our Club Sec. QPR won the game 2-1 and are going well in the Championship.

A Big Boots From The Roots Thank You

TOP_IMG_Bootsroots02_598x197

Boots for Africa has gone global! Now known as BOOTS FOR THE ROOTS it sends our football boots worldwide!

Back in May Maia started asking you for your old boots and now her collection for this year is ready to start its journey.

The FANTASTIC news is that you have kindly donated 178 pairs of boots, easily beating last year’s 130 which was pretty good anyway. Thanks to all of you that took the trouble to sort out your boots and pass them on, they will be greatly appreciated in their next life.

Want to help a bit next year?
Next September, would you consider asking your school to collect?
Or perhaps you know of another football team that might give us their old boots?
We’re also looking for a little garage space for the month for storage pre-collection…

Opportunity At U17 / U18 To Play Premier Elite Football

Sheen Lions run two U18 teams playing most Sundays in the Surrey Youth League. We still want to add two players to our U18 Lions squad. The squad plays in the Surrey Youth League Premier Elite Division and has reached major cup finals in each of its last three seasons at U14, U15 and U16.

Our U18s train each Thursday 18:00 – 19:00 at the Bank of England Sports Centre in Roehampton adjacent to our home pitches at Palewell Common. The team is coached and managed by an FA qualified coach. .

If you are interested in playing for Sheen Lions and feel you are good enough to play at this level contact Gordon Campbell gordon@sheenlions.org tel: 07722838499 and we will invite you to one of our training sessions.

Sheen Lions are an FA Charter Standard youth football club in the Sheen, Richmond, Kew, Roehampton area of South-West London. We are affiliated to the Surrey County FA and we provide coaching and organised match programmes for around 300 children from the ages of 6 to 18 years.

The Sheen Lions Club is run by volunteers enthusiastic about youth football and all our teams have qualified coaches some up to UEFA level 3. Last season we were nominated by the Surrey Youth League for a National Respect and Fairplay award and were very pleased to win the win the Toshiba Rose Bowl as the club with the best sportsmanship marks in the Surrey Youth League.

On Sunday mornings during the season our home at Palewell Park is a fantastic sight with three mini pitches, one 9v9 and three 11-a-side pitches all available to host league games under the control of qualified referees. Our excellent organisation and great coaches have made us one of the largest clubs playing in the Surrey Youth League.
