U09 Lions Finish 2018-19 Strongly Winning Byfleet

U09 Old Isleworthians

After finishing as runners up in the Ashford Town U9’s tournament, we entered two teams from the Lions squad into the annual Old Isleworthians FC tournament. Unfortunately for us, both teams were drawn against each other in the quarter final, with the winner of that game being knocked out by a golden goal in the semis.

U09 2018-19 Byfleet

On the 22/23 June weekend U09 entered the very competitive Byfleet FC tournament and finished our season strongly by lifting a trophy, beating local rivals, Barnes Eagles 4-0 in the final.

We look forward to carrying on this form next season, after a well deserved summer break!

Sheen Lions Cubs Squad 2019-20

For the 2021-22 season this notice is superseded by http://sheenlions.com/sheen-lions-cubs-squad/ and is no longer applicable.

We do not want to turn players away in the younger age groups, however demand is high and there is a limit to the number of teams we can support playing in the Surrey Youth League.

If a player cannot at the time be included in a match squad (Lions, Pride, Hoops or Rangers) then they will be offered the opportunity to register with Sheen Lions in our Cubs squad and so to continue their footballing experience with us.

Players in Cubs will be registered with the League. They will train with their age group and should an opportunity arise to offer League match play with one of the teams, they will be eligible to play. This would be subject to the team manager’s decision. Match play is NOT guaranteed for any player.

Cubs players are members or Sheen Lions and registered by us with the Surrey Youth League. They cannot train or play for any other Club.

Coaching Policy

We appoint fully qualified and DBS checked coaches to all our age groups.

The FA recommended ratio is 1 coach to 16 players. We aim to not exceed 1:15 in our younger age groups.

All our managers are all DBS checked and as a Charter Standard Club they have to hold valid FA recognised Safeguarding Children and Emergency Aid certificates.

The club encourages all our managers to achieve their Level 1 coaching status.

Sheen Lions U9 Are Runners Up At Ashford Six a Side

We had a great day yesterday at the Ashford Town U9s six-a-side tournament. We were put into a tough group consisting of our local rival Barnes Eagles, Sandgate, Ashford Town FC and Chertsey, and finished top of the group, scoring 5 and conceding just the one goal.

We then beat Old Isleworthians in the quarters and Ashford Town Bs in the semi, to reach the final.

We were up against a very strong side, Lynne FC in the final, and narrowly lost 2-1 to a goal in the dying seconds.

The boys whilst disappointed to come so close, were happy to collect the runners up trophies.

Temporary Dismissals For 2019-20

Often referred to as Sin Bins

For the 2019-20 season starting in September 2019 the Surrey Youth league as for all football in England at this level (step 7 and below) will use “temporary dismissals” for a dissent caution offence.

This will apply to all age groups, though the impression given is that it will be rarely necessary to use this with younger age groups.

For a detailed explanation please take a look at the Surrey FA page, note that this has not at the time of writing been updated for 2019-20 so its applicability is out of date.

Simple Situation

Dissent

Dissent is defined in Law 12, it is in the opinion of the referee and can be by word or action.

Note that offensive, insulting or abusive behaviour or gestures is not dissent, they will result in a sending off.

FA numbers indicte that around 25% of cautions are for dissent, and that there is a dissent caution in just less than one out of every two games.

One Dissent Caution

In a simple situation, when a player commits a dissent caution offence while on the pitch they will receive a yellow card, but their sanction will be to leave the field of play for 10 minutes (8 minutes in a game of less than 90 minutes). Time to be judged solely by the referee. The player cannot of course be substituted while off and so the team on the pitch will be a player short.

The manager should use the time with the player to calm them down and ensure that player stays warm if they intend that they will return to play. At the end of the period the player can return to play or a sustitute can be sent on.

The referee will report the offence, however there is no fine to pay, but note that an accumulation of offences by the player during the season will result in further FA sanction if thresholds are exceeded.

Keep in mind that a player in the sin bin is still under the authority of the referee and can incurr further sanction during this time.

Further Offences

It gets complicated if a player commits further offences or has already committed an offence before their sin bin. Look at the Surrey FA page

Two Dissent Cautions

A player that is sent to the sin bin twice cannot return to play after the second bin, but they can be substituted at the end of the sin bin period. Strickly this is only if you have an unused substitute, but in the SYL substitutes are roll on roll for all age groups.

However, if they also have a non dissent caution in the match then they cannot return or be substituted. This is effectively a sending off though no red card (S7) is being shown.

A Dissent and a Non Dissent

Though two yellow cards have been shown to the player this is not a red card. The non dissent offence is recorded and punished as before with a fine after the game.

Two Non Dissent Cautions

This is has not changed, the player is sent off S7.

Three Cautions

It is possible for a player to get cautioned three time in a match providing their second offence is not in the same category (Non Dissent / Dissent) as their first.

The third offence will always mean they can no longer take part and that their team will be a player short.

If two of the offences are Non Dissent then an Sending off S7 is recorded.

During summer registration, players that were register to play in the Surrey Youth League competitions for Sheen Lions at the end of the 2018-19 season do not have to provide proof of age.

  • If you join during the season then you will need to provide PoA (U08 or older).
  • U07 and younger are not registered with the league and do not need to provide PoA.
  • All U08 will have to provide Proof Of Age, because they were not registered with the League as U07.

For proof of age please provide a legible photo of your child’s passport page or birth certificate.

You should send this photo of PoA attached to the same email as your child’s ID photo as requested on your Sheen Lions registration confirmation email that you will receive after you have entered your Club registration.

2019-20 Season Plans For U18 / U17

With the end of the season looming the club’s attention now turns to next season and how we progress with the current U16s and U17/18s.

It’s a “new start” next season at U17s & U18s as the League allow the ages to combine giving teams flexibility and more scope to have big squads.

How many divisions there will be is dependent on how many teams sign up to the League but as a rule there are usually 4 divisions in this age group. Premier Elite and Championship are usually teams made up of the older boys, official U18s, and then Divisions 1 & 2 are made up mostly of official U17s. However, the ages can mix so you can have U17s play in the U18s and vice versa.

As it stands Sheen Lions have 2 x U16s squads and 1 x U17/18s squad. No doubt we will lose some boys so we will combine those that wish to stay on and intend to run 2 x U17/18s. One squad will be U17s and the other a mix of U17/18s.

We are confident we can achieve this with a good number of players in each squad, possibly 22/23 players. That may sound a lot, but history tells us that inevitably there will be unavailability due to school events, D of E commitments, injuries, weekend jobs, plus their social life becomes far more active etc. These factors always has an impact on Sunday League football so the club must take that into account when deciding on squad sizes. The bigger the squad the less pressure on boys to always be available to play on Sundays. With large squads it means the club is in a good position to be able to field two teams every week. We have done this in the past and it has proved to be successful. Our current U18s are about to play in the League Cup Final. Big squad brings big success.

We know boys mean well when they say they want to continue with Sheen Lions but saying it is not enough. The club will need the boys to commit by the end of June at the very latest. This means they will have registered with Sheen Lions, signed up to the League, provided any photos and proof of age if required, and paid fees. In turn, the club has to commit to the Bank of England for the training facility
together with coaches, the League and the FA etc. Match day kit and training equipment will be also be needed. We can only provide this if we know we have enough players. If we don’t have that commitment then we will not be in a position to enter teams with the League, the FA. nor offer training.

We will hold a training/trialling session on Palewell Common where we expect boys to attend that are keen to continue. New players are welcome to come along too that may be looking to move from other clubs or are looking for team. Attendance at these sessions will give the club a good indication as to whether we can achieve our plan.

We expect those that want to be considered to make at least two of the four dates.

Two dates are during half term when we know the boys will be studying so to be able to relax and let off steam at the end of a heavy revision period should work for them.

PALEWELL COMMON
5.30 – 7.00pm.

  • TUESDAY 28th MAY
  • THURSDAY 30th MAY
  • TUESDAY 4th JUNE
  • THURSDAY 6th JUNE

Having spoken to managers we believe this is the right way forward and will give the players a good platform to hopefully finish their time with Sheen Lions successfully and enjoyably.

Next season the U17/18s will train on Tuesday 6.30-8.00pm at the Bank of England. Club training kit, shin pads and astro trainers are to be worn.

The club looks forward to running a very successful age group.

regards
Sarah
