New For The 2017-18 Season

Football evolves and it is useful to collect together all the new things for the 2017-18 season.

Match Day Respect

No Longer A Pilot

In 2016-17 the Surrey Youth League proposed and received permission from the FA to PILOT new processes to improve match day behaviour. This was seen as a success by the FA but also by the League’s clubs who responded through surveys, feedback and workshops and will have contributed to the League being awarded National Respect League of the Year.

These processes have now been adopted by the FA and so this is no longer a pilot.

Respect Marshals

A key part of the Pilot was for each team to provide a “Pitch Marshal” to liaise with the referee and deal with any issues from their own supporters. As a result if feedback from the Pilot this role will now be termed “Respect Marshal” to clarify that its is purpose is to deal with Respect issues.

Respect Marshals At All Age Groups

During the Pilot in 2016-17 Respect Marshals were mandated for U11 to U16 age groups. Feedback from clubs in the league has clearly indicate very strong support to expand this to all age groups and Respect Marshals are now required from each team at all matches in the Surrey Youth League competitions (League and Cups). The County Cups are not Surrey Youth League competitions but teams from the Surrey Youth League playing in these competitions may still find it beneficial to have a Respect Marshal designated.

Respect Marshals should always approach and meet the Referee before the match, this is especially important if it is an U18 referee.

Respect Marshal Guidance.

Managers and Coaches Just In The Technical Area

Managers and Coaches must stand in one area only, as per best practice guidance. Do not position coaches around the pitch, and do not march up and down the line, tracking the linesman. This is poor coaching practice and can lead to disrespect.

Key Discipline Changes For 2017-18

For full details Please also visit the discipline section of the Surrey FA website.  Click here to visit the website. These changes apply to clubs operating at Step 5 and below (County FA football).

Mandatory Minimum Sanctions

You may have seen some national press coverage of this.

To ensure consistency Nationally, mandatory minimum sanctions have been introduced, an individual who receives a charge below and if found proven, will face as a minimum the sanction below listed. A Commission can increase based upon the aggravating factors that are present. These are not an entry point.

  • Assaults on a Match Official – 5 year minimum sanction
  • Physical contact on a Match official – 84 days & £100 minimum
  • Threatening a match official – 56 days/6 matches & £50 minimum

Note that any suspension includes a suspension from all refereeing.

Cards

Automatic suspensions generated from red cards and accumulated yellow cards now start 7 days after the match in which the offence is committed. So if you are sent off on the 1st August, your suspension starts on 8th August.

Appeals

The threshold for appeals against County FA misconduct hearings are now removed (used to be 2 matches and/or £25) which now means any decision found proven against clubs and/or individuals can be appealed (a fee will be required).

Fines

Late fines will now be attributed as 25% of each invoice, not £20.00 per late item. So where a caution before increased from £10.00 to £30.00 if paid late, it will now increase to £12.50.

Sin Bin Pilot

You may have seen press coverage on this. The Surrey Youth League in which we play is not involved in the Pilot so there will be no sin bins for our matches. The Surrey Primary League is the only youth league in Surrey that is piloting this process but we may well see it in the coming seasons.

SYL Win An Unprecedented Two National Awards

From U8 up Sheen Lions Teams play development and competitive football within the Surrey Youth League.

We are very pleased to see that, having won the county and regional awards for Charter Standard League of Year, SYL went on to win the National Award making it the National Charter Standard League of the Year 2016/17.

The Surrey Youth League have also won the  FA Respect League of the Year 2017. This is the first time a league has won both these awards. Well done to all of you that have helped improve the Sunday experience especially to those that have stepped up as Respect (Pitch) Marshals.

More details are on the SYL website and the respect award is currently headlining on The FA website.

U14 Lions Win Worcester Park

Well done to the Sheen Lions U14 team won the Worcester Park Cup on Saturday 10th June in convincing style. Twenty two teams competed in a European Championship style format with the winners of a group stage qualifying for a knockout.

The Lions won their group with three wins despite having lost their final group game 1-0 after loosing their goal keeper just before the game. So they were playing 11 – a – side football on a full sized pitch; with 11 players, no substitutes and no “recognised” goalie.

For the semi final Liam stepped up to keep goal and with 5 minutes training managed to keep clean sheets in the semi final and final won by the Lions 1-0 and 2-0.

A few words on the team from the anonymous reporter: Tom was cool as a cucumber in goal; Nathanael was a one (his only) match wonder; Liam, as discussed, literally played all over the park; Leon (tackling like a lion) and Charlie (confident as Cahill) were immense at the heart of the defence; Ollie found his “niche” as right wing back; Shahryar his usual inspirational self at left wing back; Lucas and Matt both immaculate, whether playing individually as a sweeper behind the defence in the 9-a-side format, or playing in tandem as a “dynamic duo” in front of the defence in the semi-final and final. Thomas and Harvey were a “Potteresque pair”, weaving their magic in attacking midfield with Theo the 3rd “midfield musketeer”: ruthless in front of goal, the penalty he won in the final sealed the victory.

The last word however must go to Dylan. Banksy’s Dad gave everyone “alter egos” before the tournament started and Dylan’s was Diego Costa. There are clear similarities: he intimidates opponents with his size and aggression, his finishing is clinical and (according to his Mum) he can get angry. Whilst we did not see any signs of anger, we did see two differences: firstly he is a real team player, harrying the opposition at all times, and secondly he is frighteningly quick.

So there you have it: the season finished with a big piece of silverware and apart from thanking Bruno, on behalf of everyone, for his inspirational coaching it was good to see him already getting excited about the prospects for next season!

Sheen Lions Summer Soccer Six 2017 – Starting

A reminder that Sheen Lions Summer Soccer Six starts, Saturday June 10th and runs for six Saturdays until July 15th.

Players should arrive at Palewell Common by 08:50 latest so they are ready to start promptly at 09:00.

Late comers may find themselves excluded from the session until there’s a convenient breaker them to join.

Current Sheen Lions members should wear their Sheen Lions training kit for the sessions. Players trialing should wear their own football training kit with plain (not replica) shirts.

All players must wear shin pads and bring refreshment. The ground will be hard so short molded studs or astros will be most suitable.

Lead coaches, wearing Sheen lions tops, for each age group will probably be:

U6 & U7 Abdoullah Kheir (AK)
U8 Sam Grayson (SG)
U9 Michael Morgan (MM)
U10 Gareth Crewe (GC)
U11 Trevor Hodge (TH)

Parents, if you are not staying to watch please ensure you are back before 10.30 to collect your child.

We hope you all enjoy the sessions

U8 Lions Enjoying The NPL Tournament 4th June

U8 Lions @ NPL

The U8 Lions had a good NPL tournament on Sunday. They played six games, won three, drew two and only lost the last game to an unfortunate own goal.

Marcus enjoyed a hot streak and scored 4 goals.

A great time was had and they all enjoyed an end of season pizza afterwards.

Young Referees Wanted For 2017-18

The Club  wish to identify Sheen Lions players that have a referee’s qualification or have done the SYL Mini Soccer Workshop.
If you would like earn some money by refereeing the young age groups on a Sunday morning please let the Club Sec, Sarah (sarah@sheenlions.org) know and she will add you to the list.

Sarah will organise it so that if you have a HOME game your team will get a  later KO so that you can referee a mini soccer game first. It works really well.
This also looks good on your CV’s and of course the Club can write references for those that help the club should they need one for Uni. or job applications.

If you have not done a course but are keen to do so, below is a link. Once the course is completed, and passed, the club will reimburse the fee on the understanding that you would then give the club your help as a referee.

In addition the Surrey Youth League will be putting on Mini Soccer Referee Workshops once the season kicks off. Information will be forwarded when available. They are popular workshops so you will need to be quick.

U9 Prides at Carshalton FC Tournament June 4th

The boys were quite brilliant in what proved to be a tough tournament on a big pitch down at Carshalton FC’s ground.

They lost one nil in the semi final to Haliford Colts.

“A real shame but the boys left with their heads held high and put on great performances against other club’s first teams in divisions higher than them”.

Si Vedat.
Manager for the day

U9 Lions Runners Up at NPL

U9 Lions – Runners Up at NPL 2017

The U9 lions played in the NPL tournament yesterday June 3rd. They played 8 matches and conceded 1 goal, which unfortunately was in the final vs Sutton Utd.

So far they have played in two tournaments, playing 13 matches and have conceded 1 goal, what a record, the boys should rightly be proud of themselves & of their runners up medals.

I would also like to thank the boys from our Pride team and Rangers team (Adam, George S. & Theo VG) for the part they played and they all managed to get on the score sheet!

“This just goes to show what strength in depth we have at U9’s and again proves what a great job our coaches are doing”.

Richard.

U9 Lions Manager.

Open Days For The Surrey FA Referee Education Academy

Surrey FA, in association with SCL, are launching a Referee Education Academy for 16-18 year olds. The course, a first of its kind for the Surrey FA, will take place at the new Surrey FA HQ Meadowbank, based in Dorking.

The course is a 2-year, full-time education and referee development programme, which includes professional coaching 4 days a week, nationally-recognised qualifications in sport and the opportunity to referee in the Fulham and Chelsea Academies.

The Surrey FA will be running two open days ahead of the course starting in September; one on the 26th May, and one on the 5th June. These open days are a fantastic opportunity to gain further insight into the way the course works, the benefits the student gets, and a chance to meet some of the key people involved.

For full details and to book the open day go to the Surrey FA website here.
