Sheen Lions Beginning With The U6

Our U18 Lions squad has finished the season in great style with the Surrey County Cup and the Premier Division trophy. Ten  or even twelve years ago many of the U18 squad started playing football with Sheen Lions.

On Saturday our U6 squad played their first representative games for Sheen Lions. We have almost 400 boys registered with Sheen Lions now, more than 60 in the U6, U7 and U8 age groups so we are  ready for 2027 and all the seasons in between.

And it is nice to see Michael bring the same motivational techniques down from the U18 to the U6.in the video.

Sheen Lions U18 County Cup Win – Pictures and Comment

We are so delighted that our U18 team brough home the Surrey County Cup on Tuesday evening. Four of the current squad were runners up in the U15 competition a few years ago and it is great to see them go one better in their last year.

We were rather surprised to find the the final was a mid week event during school holidays and our Club Secretary, Sarah was devastated that she could not be there but she said

“I cannot express how proud I am of our fantastic U18s.

They have not only won the League but have now won the Surrey County Cup. True Champions. Years of hard work and patience has finally paid off. So deserved. Well done boys. For many of the boys it is your last year with Sheen Lions and your time  is complete.”

Michael has coached the age group for most of these boys for nine seasons and has taken his teams to the U14 League Cup Final, the U15 County Cup Final and the U16 League Cup final. It was really bad news when he found he was not allowed to attend the game, I think he took some persuading that health is more important than football. It is not surprising that his phone is on charge in the picture below, Abs tells me that it was very well used in the days leading up to the game.

After the win Michael said

One of the many points I drilled into the squad this year was “If the opponents don’t score they can only draw, but if we score we can draw or win”.
What a journey and what a time to achieve this long over due cup with a great bunch of players.

Thanks to Geoff and Abdullah for stepping in at such short notice, to the players who couldn’t make it, all the supporters for bringing the hoops atmosphere, all the well wishers from outside the club and everyone at Sheen Lions.

Michael.

It is a great strength of the Sheen Lions Club that we were able to parachute Abs in to save the day and fantastic to see Geoff on the touchline again especially because he himself missed the U15 Cup final through illness.

Taking off my Webmaster hat for a moment I will also comment.

This is my last of ten seasons with Sheen Lions as a parent. I have spent nine years running teams with Geoff and for the last three years with Alison and it is an absolute delight that the strands of these three teams have come together into such a great finish. Winning is not the real measure of success at a children’s football club but the boys deserve the recognition that it brings for all their commitment over the years to their team mates and their club. The boys in this years squad have been exemplary in showing that commitment and they will all do very well in the adult world they leave us to enter this summer or next. Remembering what is really about I wish them all the best of luck now with their exams!

For those of you U18s that have not looked already there are some great photos of the event from the professional Simon Roe on his site.

Sheen Lions U18 Win Surrey County Cup

A strong performance from Sheen Lions U18 won the Surrey County Cup at Godalming Town FC. Only a single goal separated the sides, a penalty from Bertie 10 minutes from time just after Sam T had hit the post. Sheen had by far the best of possession but struggled to turn it into many goal scoring chances. Abbey Rangers showed an early threat particularly attacking down their left hand side where they often developed an overload but Charlie B in goal was only really called into action at corners showing aerial dominance.

Congratulations to all the squad including the boys who could not be there tonight but were important in winning through to the final and in particular to Michael. Despite what you said the boys wanted to do it for you and they could not have done it without you. Well done to Abs for stepping in!

Ready For The Surrey U18 Cup Final

Good luck to Sheen Lions U18 playing in the Surrey County Cup Final against Abbey Rangers Youth this evening at Godalming Town FC, Wey Court, Meadrow, Godalming, Surrey GU7 3JE.

With their league matches already completed and the Premier Division won this will be the last competitive match for half our boys, most of whom have been playing for Sheen Lions for more then 10 years.

We hope for a good game and best of luck to both teams who have done brilliantly to battle through to the final. A little more luck for Sheen though!

Sheen squad for the game is Alex, Anthony, Bertie, Charlie B, Charlie P, George, Jacob, Jamie, Max F, Max C, Ralph, Raoul, Sam B, Sam R, Sam T and Will.

The U18 is the only Surrey Cup final being played midweek and it is unfortunate, particularly for Toby, Ben and Louis who have played a huge part in getting the team through to the final but will be “watching” on Twitter somewhere up a mountain in North Wales where they are completing their DoE Gold. https://twitter.com/SheenLions

Unfortunately MM cannot be at the game, Abs and Geoff have been well briefed and will take the team for the match.

Sheen Lions U18 Win The Surrey Youth League Premier Division

A look at the Premier division table suggest our U18 squad are run away winners but they went into their last league game of the season against Brockham Badgers needing three points to be sure of the title with Binfield in particular still with six games to play and on a very strong run.

With several key defenders missing MIchael had to adjust the team and despite early Sheen pressure the task became more difficult when Brockham took an early lead with a well taken break away goal. However an equaliser from George made it 1-1 at half time. Two goals from Toby in the second half made the game and the title safe.

Well done to Michael, Mario and the boys for a very strong season in the league. No match has been easy in a competitive league.

CHAMPIONS!!!!

How fantastic is that?
Our U18s Lions have won the League and I’m simply thrilled. Thrilled for the managers, the parents, the club but mostly for them. They so deserve it.

They are a credit to Sheen Lions F.C. and superb role models for our younger players. Patience, hard work, commitment and dedication has finally paid off.

I am the proudest Club Secretary there can possibly be.

Congratulations to everyone.

Sarah

U18s Reach Surrey County Cup Final

U18 CC Semic

In a tight game at the Memorial Ground Sheen Lions came from behind to win their County Cup semifinal against Westside 2-3.

Westside dominated the early part of the game and easily earned a goal after 13 minutes but Sheen began to get the measure of the game and gradually came into it. Toby was unlucky to have a great 18 yard strike ruled out when the referee judged he had gained control with his arm but Joe evened the game up on 25 minutes to make it 1-1 at half time and a game that could go either way.

Early pressure high up the pitch early in the second half forced a mistake from the usually excellent Westside keeper and Charlie P was able to slot home from a tight angle. When Charlie P made it 1-3 around 70 minutes tucking away the rebound after a great double save by their keeper it looked like Sheen would be comfortable.  However a brave header from Westside made it 2-3 with 15 minutes to go. Sheen failed to convert two one on one chances and were denied by a clearance off the line, but they needed some brave defending to hold out to the end.

Well done to Westside for a strong performance in a close game and to our U18 boys with Michael and Mario for earning the chance to play in the County Cup final. We look forward to a great occasion.

Our Club Sec Sarah said

Former Sheen Lion Expected to Play Against ManU

We are expecting a Sheen Lions interest in the FA cup replay between Manchester United and Cambridge United on Tuesday at Old Trafford.

Former Sheen Lion Harrison Dunk is the Cambridge No 11 and has played for them since 2011. Harrison started his football with Sheen Lions and played through with us until U16 in the same team as Sarah’s younger boy.

We wish Harrison and Cambridge luck for the replay.

U18 Lions Reach County Cup Semies

Well done to our U18 Lions squad and their coach Michael Morgan, an emphatic 7-0 win yesterday against Knaphill Athletic take them through to the Surrey County Cup semi finals.

The U18s are prolific scorers in this competition with wins of 2-5, 1-5, 8-2 and now 7-0 but they will face strong opposition in the semis draw where they are in the pot with Abbey Rangers, Westside Boys and Frimley Green.

Good luck in the next round and in the Premier league where the squad are also playing well with P11, W9, D1, L1 and a goal difference of +24.
